Macinna of Covey

The 1817 slave register for John Tharp's Covey estate includes five children whose mother's name was given as Macinna: Alexander Young (b. 1806), William Young (b. 1808), James Young (b. 1809), Nancy Young (b. 1811) and Jane Young (b. 1817). All five were described as Mulatto, indicating that their father was white.

There was, however, no woman named Macinna included in the register for this estate or any of the other estates that John Tharp owned. She may have been listed under another name, or died after giving birth to Jane.

The 1820 return of 'increases' and 'decreases' on the estate records Jane's death on the 20th of September 1818.

Going down a generation, the 1832 return for the estate records the birth of Edward Jones to Nancy Young. Edward was described as Quadroon, indicating that his father was also white.
