Three women called Sukey on Lansquinet

The 1817 slave register for John Tharp's Lansquinet estate includes three individuals with a mother called Sukey or Suckey: Matilda (b. 1769), Seinda (b. 1778) and Jessy (b. 1816). Later returns add: Bolivar (b. 18th of December 1819)* and John Robinson or Robertson (1823-1825).

The register lists three women called Sukey or Suckey on the estate:

 - Suckey (b. 1744)  was the only one old enough to be the mother of Matilda and Seinda. For Matilda's children, see 'Two women called Matilda on Lansquinet'.

- Sukey (b. 1769) was the daughter of Nancy (see 'A confusion of women called Nancy and Nanny on Lansquinet'). This Sukey would have been 47 when Jessy was born, 50 when Bolivar was and was probably too old at 54 to have given birth to John Robinson/Robertson.

- Sukey (b. 1790) was the daughter of Sally (see 'Three women called Sally on Lansquinet'). She would have been between the ages of 26 and 33 when Jessy, Bolivar and John Robinson/Robertson were born, and could have given birth to any or all of them.

John's mother was designated as 'Suckey [sic] Little', and the temptation is to assume that John Robinson/Robertson was the only son of Suckey Little, who must have been Sukey (b. 1790). However, the three births were recorded in three different documents, and there is no reason to assume that they were consistent in how they distinguished between individuals. The man or men who noted the mother's name for Jessy and Bolivar may have thought it unnecessary, because of the older Sukey's age, to specify that the mother was the younger Sukey.

* Bolivar's birth was recorded in the 1820 return of 'increases' and 'decreases', which is the only one that gives dates.
