Bella of Covey

In the 1817 slave register for John Tharp's Covey estate, eight children were listed with a mother called Bella: Harry (1774-1832), Roger (b. 1777), Hagar (1786-1825), Sabina (b. 1789), Abraham (b. 1795), Stephen (b. 1798), Billy Hewitt (b. 1799) and Edith, who was also known as Edey (b. 1799).

Bella was described as creole (born in Jamaica), and her age was estimated as 64 (b. 1753). She had her children between the ages of 21 and 46.

Going down a generation, Hagar had two children: Mary Campbell, also known as Cora (b. 1806), and possibly also Nelly Miles (b. 1825), though another possible mother for Nelly is discussed in a post called 'Two women called Daphne on Covey'

Sabina had two children: Ned Higginson (b. 1821) and John Service (b. 1824). The mother of George Dicks (b. 1821) is listed as Eddy, but since no-one of that name was listed, I have assumed that this was a mis-spelling of Edey.
