Two women called Sukey on Covey

The 1817 slave register for John Tharp's Covey estate lists  a one-year-old called Thomas Crawford (b. 1816), whose mother was called Sucky. When the birth of William Service (b. 18th of July 1819) was recorded in the 1820 return, his mother was called Suckey. These variant spellings are both versions of the name Sukey.
Two women were listed under this name in the 1817 register: Suckey 1st, whose age was estimated as 30 (b. 1787) and Suckey 2nd aka Sucky Anderson, whose age was estimated as 54 (b. 1763). It's likely that they were numbered for administrative convenience -- if they'd been known as Sukey 1st and Sukey 2nd in everyday life, we might expect Sukey 1st to have been the older of the two.

The younger Sukey would have been about 29 when Thomas Crawford was born and 32 when William Service was. The older Sukey would have been about 53 when Thomas was born and 56 when William was. In theory, Thomas Crawford could have been the son of Sukey 2nd and William Service of Sukey 1st, but given Sukey 2nd's age, it's more likely that William and Thomas were brothers.

The mother of the younger Sukey was called Daphne (see 'Two women called Daphne on Covey').
