Marote of Lansquinet

In the 1817 slave register and later updates for John Tharp's Lansquinet estate, there are four individuals whose mother is named as Marote: Peggy (b. 1811), Jenny (b. 1814), Deigo [sic] (b. 1816) and Monemia (b. 1st of June 1818).*

Marote is also listed in her own right, as having been born in about 1778. The 1823 return of 'increases' and 'decreases' records her death at the age of 42.

Peggy was given as the mother's name for a baby girl called Bess (b. 1825) and Peggy Wilson as the mother's name for Margin (1831-1832).

There were two other young woman who could have been Margin's mother:

1. Peggy (b. 1802, see 'Mimba of Lansquinet')
2. Peggy (b. 1815, see 'American Bess or Betty of Lansquinet')

Since the two younger Peggys were only 14 and 10 when Bess was born, it is most likely that she was the daughter of 23-year-old Peggy (see 'Mimba of Lansquinet'), and that is the family tree I have put her into. I have included Margin here, but only tentatively, because any of the three Peggys could have been the one known as Peggy Wilson.

Another baby whose mother's name was not recorded was born and died in 1823. Her name was Marote, perhaps in memory of the Marote who had died three years earlier, though it's unlikely that even Peggy was old enough to be her mother.

* Monemia's birth was recorded in the 1820 return of 'increases' and 'decreases', which is the only one that gives dates.
